Skiing vacations have a reputation for being expensive-a sport for the well-heeled. Dropping big bucks certainly would not be a challenge for this type of holiday, but there are lots of ways to make it more affordable. If you hoping to hit the slopes on a budget, here are some helpful hints to put together an affordable ski trip.
Go in the Off-Peak Season
This tip may sound a bit obvious, but ski resorts and hotels really offer great deals to lure in people during the slower periods since they have no issue getting bookings during busy times like holidays and school vacations. If your schedule allows, take full advantage, and book a trip at the beginning or end of the season. The savings can be significant.
Ski Mid-Week
Like booking in the off-season, going mid-week can offer even more savings. Bookings are down and resorts often offer great deals for booking during the week. Many smaller hotels and beds and breakfast may offer significant discounts on lodging, along with free or steeply discounted tickets for nearby resorts.
Package Deals and Discounted Lift Tickets
Look for package deals that include everything for one price. In some cases, you can get lodging and lift tickets for the same or even less than you would just pay for lift tickets at a resort. If you have to pay for lift tickets separately, check out sites that offer discounts such as Liftopia.com or Liftickets.com. You may save anywhere from 15 to 70 percent. Resort may also offer discounts directly at their website.
Plan Early
If you want to really rake in the savings on your next ski trip, start planning it early. Many of the best deals are offered months in advance of the ski season, from lift tickets to lodging. Some of the best time to find deals are when the current season is winding down and early fall. This may save you 20 percent or more.
If you do decide to do something last minute, check directly with resorts about any specials. Many may offer significant discounts to make up for a drop in bookings.
Getting There
If you are planning on flying, do not just look at sites that allow you to compare multiple fares at once. Not all airlines participate, and you could be missing out on the best price. In the US for example, popular budget option Southwest does not advertise its fares on booking sites. Skip on the rental car to get you and your gear there. Look into taking a bus or check out ridesharing options on websites that set up ski carpools. Once you are there, resorts offer shuttles that allow you to get around for free, so you really won’t need a car once you get there.
Eating
As someone who frequently rents houses and apartments while traveling rather than hotels, I can tell you first-hand how much money you truly save when you make your own food, rather than eat out all the time. So, that is your best bet. But, if you don’t have cooking facilities or want no part of cooking while on vacation, you can still save some money. Look for resorts that offer free food during après-ski; many also have free pizza days. Eat at the bar instead of in the dining room.
